Last week's official numbers feel much more authentic comparing to the week before.  Avatar continues to hold remarkably steady.  It is probably eye-catching to see the 2.9% weekly increase, but I suspect it more has to do with the fact that the 3rd week was under-reported.  As we move closer to Chinese Lunar New Year, a new influx of movigoers, in particular students, began to join the market, making $200m a real possibility.   The only question is how high the authority is willing to let it get to.  When True Legend, the first Chinese 3D film, opens next Tuesday, how many 3D screens Avatar loses will give us the first glimpse of the answer.

Confucius will pass 100m yuan according to the official figure, but it will do so amid of massive controversy and still end up as a financial disappointment.  This week's numbers only confirm the suspicion that the opening week was inflated by 10m yuan, as the average ticket price suddenly dropped from 42 yuan for the first three days to the much more normal level of 32 yuan last week.
And there is Pleasant Goat and Big Big Wolf 2, a film which completely stole Confucius' thunder since its opening on Friday and did it the proper way.  Building on the success of the original (80m yuan, a superb figure for a domestic animated feature and one of the biggest surprises of 2009), the sequel sprinted to a 45m yuan opening weekend, 60% higher than what Confucius received (if we use 28m as its real opening number), and will cruise past 100m this week.  It could even get to 200m yuan considering the holiday season helped the first one to achieve a 5.0+ multiplier from the first three days.

  2. Well I don't really see the point of True Legend being in 3D but I guess its a safe bet to try that format ... hopefully it does well Woo Ping as the director and several famous actors should make this a solid hit with a help of 3D

I personally am looking forward to it
